We’ve all heard the saying ‘April showers bring May flowers’ - and if you have a leaky basement April showers might also bring about some flooding. Keeping that in mind, here are a few tips from our experts on properly storing your belongings in your basement to protect them from water damage.

Keep things off of the floor.

Storing your belongings on shelves will keep them from being damaged in case of a flood, but even without flooding moisture can be absorbed through the concrete and cause similar damage. Not to mention, it’s one less tripping hazard in your basement!

Use airtight bags and containers.

If it fits into a bag or container it should be stored in one! Not only will it keep water out but it’ll also keep out any musty basement odors.

Assess your basement regularly.

Keep an eye on the condition of your basement and your belongings to ensure they remain in good shape and if they do show signs of rust or water damage you can address it quickly and avoid bigger issues down the road.

Avoid storing certain valuables in the basement.

There are some things that should be stored with great care - such as wedding dresses, collectibles and electronics. Unless your basement is climate controlled, keep such items somewhere safer.
